Coat Type

coat types

Double Coat

Examples: Golden Retrievers, Huskies, Hounds, and Labradors.

This is the most common coat type, found in about 80% of dogs. Double-coated breeds have a dense undercoat for insulation and a coarser outer coat for protection. They tend to shed a lot, especially seasonally.

Dogs with smooth coats have short hair that lies flat against their skin. These coats are generally low-maintenance.

Smooth Coat

Examples: Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, and Boxers.

Curly Coat

Examples: Poodles, "Doodle" mixes (like Goldendoodles and Labradoodles), and Bichon Frises.

Curly-coated breeds have hair that grows in tight curls, often resembling wool. These coats require consistent grooming and regular brushing at home to prevent matting.

Wire-coated dogs have a dense, harsh outer coat with a softer undercoat. Their fur is typically wiry and stiff to the touch.

Wire Coat

Examples: Jack Russell Terriers, Schnauzers, and most other Terrier breeds.

Drop/long   Coat

Examples: Cocker Spaniels, Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, and Shih Tzus.

These breeds are characterized by long, flowing hair that can reach the ground if left untrimmed. Drop coats require frequent grooming to prevent tangles and mats.
